-What type of funding has been most helpful for your projects/careers? (development grants, production grants, finishing grants, other resources, etc?)

DISCUSSION GUIDELINES

  1. Take Space: Don*t be afraid to speak up! However, if sharing with a group is difficult for you, you can submit written comments via online form. If you have a disability and a group adjustment would help you participate, please inform your group facilitator.
  1. Make Space: Be mindful of how much time you*re taking up. This is a collaborative discussion, and we want as many film and media creators as possible to participate.
  1. Create a Culture of Respect and Inquiry: Please be respectful when offering suggestions or feedback. Some of the folks who run the filmmaker programs are in the room! You should still be honest, but keep in mind the goal of finding solutions, together.
  • It is natural to disagree during a discussion, and even disagree with organizations and their strategies. Again, please keep the discussion constructive and respectful.
  • Avoid assumptions about any member of the discussion or generalizations about social
  • groups. Do not ask individuals to speak for their (perceived) social group. Do not invalidate anyone*s experience.
  1. Focus: Please stay on topic! There are many challenges filmmakers face, and we can*t possibly address them all in one session. If you are interested in discussing festivals, consider attending the Film Festival Alliance Listening Session tomorrow at 1pm.
  2. Keep the Discussion Going!: Feel free to keep discussing during the Happy Hour following, and sign up to receive a Findings Summary from this event.

Kate Helen Downey

51蹤獲’s March Owning It Accountability Challenge: Pitch Decks is almost here! Read an alum’s thoughts on the program below, then be sure to .

Can you share a little bit about your background?

I came up in theater and live events, as an Assistant Director at New York City Opera and an Assistant Producer at the Public, then transitioned into live event startups by helping build Museum Hack at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After years of creating live experiences inside museums across the country, I co-founded Caveat NYC, a theater putting on educational entertainment in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We produced a lot of live podcast shows, and being a longtime podcast listener, I became curious about producing our live show content in podcast form. During the pandemic, while live theaters were shut down, I transitioned fully into the podcast industry, and started producing podcasts & live episodes with Pushkin, Himalaya, and Wondery. I also produce Celebrity Book Club with Chelsea Devantez. Naturally, I became interested in producing my own podcast. That*s what brought me to the OI Accountability Challenge!

Why were you interested in participating in the OI Accountability Challenge?

After years of taking other peoples* podcast ideas from concept to fully realized show, I found myself overwhelmed and procrastinating when it came to giving my OWN idea the same treatment. I was frustrated with how long I was putting off taking the necessary steps to move the project forward, and how easy it was to prioritize other people*s projects over my own. I needed accountability and deadlines to make myself show up!  A friend had previously worked with 51蹤獲, and suggested the OI Accountability Challenge when I shared my frustrations with her, and I signed up immediately.

Can you describe your experience participating in OI Accountability Challenge? What aspects were most impactful for you?

Honestly it*s a program that perfectly understands the challenges creative people have when trying to move their own projects forward. From the moment I was accepted into the Challenge, I was moved through the process with gentle but firm reminders, clear expectations, and supportive information. It really gives you no excuses to procrastinate.

What have you been up to since participating in the Challenge?

I*ve been sharing my deck with friends in the industry for feedback and networking, gathering my team to produce a sizzle, and building out my pitch strategy with tools provided in the Challenge.

Do you have any advice for fellow creatives about making the most of their involvement in the challenge this year?

Don*t wait for the perfect time – do it now! And don*t lose momentum once you*ve got some.

Kate Helen Downey (she/her) is the Co-founder of Caveat NYC, Lead Producer of Wondery, and Producer of Celebrity Book Club with Chelsea Devantez. Find her at www.katehelendowney.com, and as @katehelendowney on Twitter & Instagram.

Over the month of August, participants will participate in workshops and meet with their partners and mentors in preparation for a five-minute pitch and feedback session with a panel of industry leaders during the culminating Pitch Feedback Session with Kamala Avila-Salmon, Head of Inclusive Content for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group; Ginger Chan, Senior Vice President of Consumer Communications at Endeavor; and Meghan Ross, Head of Creator Success at Seed&Spark.

In addition to sharing their pitches, participants will also speak about their experience in the Accountability Challenge and respond questions from attendees.

By providing opportunities to connect with others, hear feedback from industry leaders, and mentorship, participants walk away from the Accountability Challenge with the tools necessary to develop and present successful pitches to potential funders across industries.

Also she has placed in major screenwriting competitions such as the Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship Competition, WeScreenplay Feature Screenwriting Competition, Final Draft Big Break Screenwriting Competition and more with her portfolio of scripts. She is the creator and showrunner for workplace digital series Ms/Manage, which recently screened at the 2022 Pan African Film Festival, and in pre-production for The Table, a digital series about a 10-year relationship glimpsed exclusively from the couple’s dining room table. Her marketing experience includes roles at Viacom and Global Citizen. Caralene is a graduate of Howard University and NYU.

Jax Weiner

During her decades-long career as an independent film editor in NYC, Jax cut everything from documentaries about the aftermath of the US war in Vietnam, to an experimental short about queerness and surveillance, to the karaoke video for Hanson*s MMMBop. In her free time she*s an amateur Bollywood dancer. For her first short film as a director, she turned to her 51蹤獲 of teachers and fellow dance students. Between Two Worlds premiered at and won the audience award at the Boston Asian American Film Festival in October 2021 and has gone on to receive multiple awards as the festival run continues. Over the month of March, participants will participate in workshops and meet with their partners and mentors, to prepare to give a five-minute pitch and receive feedback from a panel of industry leaders during a culminating with Ayme Sinclair, CEO & Founder of Sinclair Social; Meghan Ross, Head of Creator Success at Seed&Spark; and Ashley Soto Paniagua, podcaster and writer for The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.

This session is open to the public and will take place during the 2022 Owning It Summit on Thursday, March 31.

Congratulations to the creators and projects selected to participate in the Owning It Pitch Deck Accountability challenge, including:

Eva Midgley, Frida does Flamenco

Growing up in a village of just seven houses in the Netherlands, Eva Midgley*s passion for stories stems from a need to entertain herself. While writing, producing and directing her own projects, Midgley works worldwide as a successful commercials director. Her latest short, THE BIRTHDAY CUT, won Best Drama at the NY International Shorts Film Festival. Her feature script, FRIDA DOES FLAMENCO, placed Second Rounder in the Austin Film Festival 2021. She currently lives in New York.

Midgley looked forward to meeting with her accountability partners and mentor. Her submission encouraged her to focus on pitch decks in a way she hadn*t previously, turning an idea into a tangible, visible first form to discuss with others.

Dominique Nisperos, Comedian

Dominique Nisperos is a Brooklyn-based comedian who escaped the academy to write and perform comedy full time. A former doctoral candidate in sociology, Ford Fellow, and writer/performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, she now co-produces and hosts Banana Ketchup, a Fillipinx-centered comedy show fore-fronting diverse voices in comedy.

Nisperos looked forward to learning about the tools to create an excellent podcast. She also expressed interest in highlighting the ways Asian Femmes navigate and contribute to American art, culture, politics and more.

Lauren Ferebee, 155 Charles

Lauren Ferebree is a recent Los Angeles transplant after completing her MFA in playwriting at the University of Arkansas. She is a Kennedy Center awardee for her space trash sci-fi play, Goods, and her first feature script, Brilliance, was awarded a state arts fellowship in Arkansas. She writes extraordinary stories about women braving the wilds of the world, whether it’s in the future, the present, or, in the case of her current project 155 Charles, the past.

Ferebee hoped to learn more about the art of pitching and develop strong pitch decks. She was also excited by the opportunity to connect with other creators in her cohort and delve into the projects driving their passion.

Marlee Rodrigues, Writer/Director

Marlee Rodrigues is one-half of sister writing-directing duo, the Rodrigues Sisters, named 2021 Humanitas Prize drama fellowship finalists and 2020-2021 Women in Film mentees. Rodrigues is a graduate of New York University Tisch, where she made her first feature, Little Miss Perfect, streaming on Amazon Prime. She is currently the Associate Program Director and Advanced Directing Professor at the Los Angeles Film School and completing her masters at USC.

Rodrigues was excited to work with 51蹤獲 staff, mentors, and accountability partners. As an alum of a previous accountability challenge, she felt the program worked against mental barriers like procrastination and perfectionism. She is grateful for the feedback and support needed to polish her sophomore feature film pitch deck.

Masami Kawai, Valley of the Tall Grasses

Masami Kawai is a Los Angeles-born filmmaker who divides her time between Oregon and LA. Her work integrates issues of race, class, gender, and what it means to be an immigrant in the United States. Her work has screened at various venues, including the Rotterdam Film Festival, LACMA, LA Asian Pacific Film Festival, Portland International Film Festival, and Indie Memphis. She*s currently working on a feature film that follows an old TV/VCR combo set as it circulates through the lives of working-class characters of color in an Oregon town. The project has garnered support from institutions such as 51蹤獲 (previously IFP), Cine Qua Non screenwriting lab, Northwest Film Center, and University of Oregon.

Kawai believed the Challenge offered the structure to work on her project and meet new people.

Mel House, Writer/Creator, Actress & Producer

Mel House, an award-winning actress and comedian, recently played Judy in THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME and toured internationally in Rome, Cagliari, Belgrade, Dublin, and New York City with a new play about same-sex parenting. She is the writer and creator behind HOT ANGRY MOM〞a dark comedy about female rage, which unpacks anger myths and invites audiences to consider the ways that healthy anger makes us more authentic and whole. House tells stories, makes jokes and takes on projects that excite, provoke and promote conversations around gender, power and sexuality.

House felt excited to come away with a revitalized sense of purpose, equipped with stronger materials to share her series* story why it should be made, as well as the confidence to approach meetings with different types of industry partners.

Mia Jessup, Writer

Mia Jessup is an award-winning actor and writer based in Brooklyn. Her surreal, darkly comedic short films have screened at more than thirty film festivals, and her directorial debut premiered in a program highlighting comedic shorts at the IFP Center. As an actor, Jessup has appeared on Comedy Central’s The President Show, Billy on the Street and national commercials. You might also recognize her hands from numerous print ads. In 2021, Jessep*s original comedy pilot was a semifinalist for the Sundance Episodic Lab.

Jessep looked forward to perfecting the art of pitch deck and making new friends.

Nancy Burneo Salazar, Director and Producer

Nancy Burneo Salazar is a documentary filmmaker born in Ecuador, a country where she constantly moves from the Sierra to the Amazon. She is currently motivated by stories about the struggle for territory. She appreciates transiting within Ecuador as much as outside of it, and travels constantly between California and New York, where she has strong ties to stories related to migration and racial justice. Salazar has taught editing at Ecuador’s largest public university and designed the teaching methodology for 51蹤獲 filmmaking and participatory documentary workshops. She graduated from the Social Documentary Program at the School of Visual Arts of New York in 2016.

Salazar wanted to capitalize on a supportive network of female creators and entrepreneurs to share projects and offer feedback. She looked forward to testing her ability to communicate the stories she wants shared in front of an audience with different backgrounds and geographies.

Paula Belchior, A PERFECT FAMILY

Paula Belchior is a NY-based Brazilian former TV executive (HBO LatAm) who turned into a writer-producer, creative consultant (with jobs for Amazon and Floresta-Sony), and an invited juror at the International Emmy Awards. With an 18-year career and an M.A. in Cinema Studies from NYU, Paula focuses on creating complex characters in socially conscious narratives that show empathy and reflection through the power of storytelling.

As an immigrant, Belchior felt the Owning It Pitch Deck Accountability Challenge offered the unique opportunity to delve into the specificities of the U.S. industry and elevate her project through valuable mentorship, in addition to building a strong support network within her cohort.

Shawnee Gibbs

Shawnee Gibbs is a writer and producer who specializes in content for television, film, comics and graphic novels. She has written for HarperCollins, Warner Bros. Animation, Dreamworks, and Cartoon Networks.

Gibbs looked forward to becoming part of a supportive 51蹤獲 of like-minded filmmakers who work to launch new projects, as well as setting a hard deadline to meet her pitch deck goal.

Shawnelle Gibbs

Shawnelle Gibbs is a television writer and producer from Oakland, California currently based in Los Angeles. She has written for Warner Bros. Animation, Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing.

Gibbs felt excited to learn more pitch deck tips and form connections within the cohort.

Shireen Alihaji

Shireen Alihaji is a First Gen, Ecuadorian-Iranian, Muslim and Disabled filmmaker. Her intersections inspire her to create space through film technologies. Given how we remember is pivotal to healing, her films use memory as a central gaze to de-internalize surveillance, uncensor the imagination and mirror our infinite reflections.

IFP And SeriesFest Launch Development Initiative For Independent Creators /press/ifp-and-seriesfest-launch-development-initiative-for-independent-creators/ Thu, 03 May 2018 17:03:45 +0000 /?post_type=pressrelease&p=26318

Denver, CO (May 3, 2018) 〞 The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) and SeriesFest are proudly partnering to launch the ※Forward Impact Project,§ a year-round initiative designed to help finance, produce, release, scale, and build an audience for 15 select independent series deemed ready for development and production. These projects will be selected in collaboration by SeriesFest and IFP and will include long-form, digital and international projects.

The Forward Impact Project will take place during IFP Week in NYC, beginning on September 20, 2018, and will give the selected creators the opportunity to pitch to and receive feedback from a curated group of key industry players, including financiers, network executives, distributors and producers. The creators will then take one-on-one with meetings with the professionals in the room to help advance their projects.

In addition, each creator will be paired with a Forward Impact Ambassador, a successful IFP or SeriesFest alumni or industry professional that will serve as their mentor throughout the program. They will also be invited to participate in special VIP events at both IFP Week (September 15-20, 2018) and SeriesFest: Season Four (June 22-27, 2018).

IFP Executive Director Joana Vicente commented, ※IFP prides itself on opening doors for independent storytellers, and this initiative speaks to the core of our mission. It is a fitting program to include in our 40th Anniversary year.§ SeriesFest founder and CEO Randi Kleiner agreed, ※We are thrilled to be able to offer this one-of-a-kind opportunity to emerging voices in the industry that so often go unheard.§

Markets and festivals are not the same. Some filmmakers may find the difference confusing because the Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals operate concurrently with an adjoining film market. Sundance is a festival but an informal market of sorts has grown up around the festival with distributors bidding to acquire rights to some films.

Markets are generally only open to the trade, and the fee to attend limits attendance to industry professionals. A member of the public usually cannot buy a ticket to see a film at a market or participate in it. At markets, films are screened for buyers. Actually, it would be more accurate to call these buyers “licensees” since they usually do not buy ownership of a film, but license distribution rights for a term of years in their country. A buyer might be a German broadcaster interested in acquiring films to distribute on his cable television service. Another buyer might be a theatre-chain owner who wants to exhibit films in Turkey. Some buyers want all media rights (including theatrical, television, digital, and home video) in a territory, and may sub-license some of those rights to other distributors.

Markets are an opportunity for buyers worldwide to interact with those who license film rights. These licensors are usually sales agents acting on behalf of producers. In the course of a market, a buyer can talk to many sales agents and view multiple films. Deals may be signed during the market or afterwards. The market is also an opportunity for sellers and buyers to socialize, and to build relationships with people with whom they often transact business by email or phone.

Festivals, on the other hand, are open to the public. Anyone can buy a ticket to a screening, although at the most popular festivals, there may not be enough tickets to go around. Festivals can provide a test of a film’s audience appeal. A festival screening may be the first opportunity for the filmmaker to see how typical moviegoers react to the film. ?Of course, festivalgoers tend to be better educated and wealthier than the average moviegoer. Nevertheless, a festival screening does provide some good feedback.

Festivals serve several important functions. First, they expose films to distributors. Acceptance at a top festival will induce many acquisition executives to take a look at a film, either at the festival or by asking to screen the film outside the festival. Winning a top festival may make a film highly desirable in the eyes of distributors and may lead to a bidding war.

Festivals can also generate publicity for a film and draw the public’s attention to it. Thus, once distribution has been secured, the distributor may want to screen the film in festivals to build awareness and perhaps generate good reviews. If the timing of the festival is near the release date?of?the film, participation in the festival may help publicize the picture. Alternatively, if the film is not going to be released for another six months, publicity now may not be helpful; it can even be harmful. When the film is released, the prior coverage will have been forgotten by the public, and the news media will consider the film old news. The media may not review the film again or write articles about it.

Although father may not always know best, Goodbye to All That’s heartfelt and humorous look at a middle-age dad who, after an unpleasant divorce, is quickly thrown into a world of new opportunities (of the female variety) and struggles (concerns for his kin), proves that he most certainly tries. Director Angus MacLachlan, known in the film world for writing the Academy Award-nominated Junebug and Robert De Niro starrer Stone, makes his directorial debut here, proving that he has quite an assured approach to getting the best out of his actors; he guides them to strong performances that are equally realistic and morosely funny (his lead, Paul Schneider, won the 2014 Best Actor Award at the Tribeca Film Festival). As the film gets set to open, I spoke with MacLachlan about what lead him to the directing chair and just how much of a collaborative effort goes into the filmmaking process. The film is currently playing at the and is available .

〞 Erik Luers

IFP: What lead you to?Goodbye to All That, your directorial debut? As a screenwriter, had you often been on set for your previous films??Is that how you “caught the bug?”

MacLachlan: I’ve been on the set of all the films I’ve written. I was first educated as an actor, and then was a playwright and screenwriter for a number of years (I also directed for the stage a lot). It was something that I always wanted to do, and my directorial debut came about when I offered my screenplay to Phil Morrison, the director of Junebug. He said “Angus, the central emotional component of your film is the father-daughter relationship, and I don’t have children, but you do. I think you should direct it.” I then gave it to another friend, who is also a director, and?he said the same thing. Eventually, I spoke to my producers?and they?asked who I wanted to direct the film. I said that I wanted someone as good as Phil [Morrison], but if we couldn’t get him, then I was interested in doing it myself. They thought about it, came back, and said “well, let’s see if we can try and do that.”

Having now directed a feature, do you see filmmaking as more of a collaborative process? While you also wrote the screenplay for the film, this is your first time working with a cinematographer, editor, etc.? Do you?find yourself thinking more about how to do things like a scene transition, when to employ a dissolve, when to fade to black, etc.?

MacLachlan: Oh yeah. You know, as a screenwriter, that’s one of the frustrating things. Not only did I have aspirations to direct, but as an actor and a Visual Arts major in school, I had a real idea of how I think things should be played in a scene. I had a great editor on this project, Jennifer Lilly, who I sat beside everyday and we’d say “let’s try this, let’s try that, let’s move this around…” I loved that collaboration. That was a fantastic aspect of directing and was one of the things I enjoyed the most, considering directing was the scariest thing I’d ever done! I was so scared. [laughs]

How important is casting then? Do you direct and edit to the strength of the performance?

MacLachlan: We had a great casting director, Mark Bennett, and I loved the cast we came up with. But it really did show to me, being in the editing room, how vulnerable performances on film are. You can really, really create a performance in the editing room. You can make someone look much worse than they normally are or much better than they normally are. You can really create moments that work well, in the act of playing, by how long you cut back-and-forth between two actors. That was amazing to me. Film actors have to really throw themselves into the dark and have to trust their director that something good will come from it. It’s why a lot of times people go, “I don’t understand. That actor was so good in that movie and yet so terrible in this other one!” That happens a lot, and as an actor, you’re really at the mercy of the elements chosen by the director.?

You had mentioned that you are a father yourself, so I’d like to ask how Goodbye to All That came to be. It feels inspired by the films of Robert Benton, with situations at times reminiscent of Benton’s?Kramer VS Kramer. It’s rare to see a father’s side of this story.

MacLachlan:?Well, I’m not divorced, but I do have one daughter (like Otto does in the film). It came about because a lot of my friends had gone through breakups like this, and I started to takes notes about their experiences. They would tell me stories that were harrowing and funny and neurotic and exciting and really sad, and all the while, I kept taking notes. And you’re right, this is sort of a slightly funnier version of?Kramer VS Kramer. Another inspiration was ?An Unmarried Woman?from 1978, a film that?focuses on a mother learning how to stand on her own two feet. I wanted to see if you could tell that story from a man’s perspective. It’s not that Otto is immature, but rather that he’s unconscious and has to have his consciousness raised. When?An Unmarried Woman?came out, it was about the feminist movement and about raising the female consciousness to say that “if a man can do it, then I can do it too.” I think there are a lot of men who don’t know what’s going on, don’t pay attention, and need to have their consciousness raised.

Why did you choose to set the film in North Carolina? I know your lead actor, Paul Schneider, is from there, but do you share any?history with the state?

MacLachlan: That’s where I’m from and I?still live there. The film is shot in my hometown, and there’s actually a lot of North Carolinans in the film. Amy Sedaris is from Raleigh and Heather Lawless, who plays Lara, is from Cherokee. And Anna Camp is from South Carolina, so there’s a lot of connections.

The film encompasses a very distinct, classical piano score throughout the film. It feels perfectly right for the setting. Could you speak about working with a composer?

MacLachlan: All of the music is actually heightened piano concertos. Early on, when I was first imagining directing the film, I knew I wanted music and I knew that I didn’t want pop music. I really couldn’t afford that and I think it’s a real cliche now. There’s something about heightened piano concertos that really felt like the character of Otto. There’s a certain out of control element to them, like silent comedians, and I feel like Otto is somewhat out of control at certain points in his life. The music is also in the public domain. I had to fight for them a lot. A lot of people said that it wasn’t going to work and that we need other music in there, and yet there’s something interesting about the formality of the classical music that we used and this story.

The film begins with Otto competing in a track competition, and subsequently throughout the film we are exposed to a tracking shot of him running and having to deal with an injury he had sustained earlier in the film. Was it important to create a physical distinction for the character? It’s such a recurring motif to keep going back to that injury as Otto’s personal experiences get tougher.

MacLachlan: Absolutely. It was one of my intentions to make Otto an athlete and particularly a runner, because runners are trained not to pay attention to pain. They are supposed to run through their pain, sometimes to the detriment of their bodies and thus hurting themselves more. That’s who Otto is. He doesn’t pay attention to his pain. I mean, something has been wrong in his marriage for quite a while that he had not paying attention to. I wanted him to have an injury, his Achilles Heel, that he keeps trying to run past and yet it’s still there. He loses to a woman ?an older woman, at that ?in the last scene of him running (whereas he won the first race we see him in). There’s a real key there that was intentional for me, to physicalize it. He’s going to have this injury and this scar forever, and it’s very much like divorce. You’re going to live with it forever and you can never get away from it, especially if you’re a parent.

The film really captures the joy of being single again and being able to flirt with someone privately online, whether it be thru dating websites or on Facebook. It also documents the pain of finding out (via social media) that your wife has been doing much more than just flirting. Much of the excitement and pain apparent is derived simply from the camera’s attention to Schneider’s face. How do you shoot a compelling scene involving an actor, one-on-one, without another physical presence there??

MacLachlan: The scenes that you’re talking about, where Otto finds out that his wife is cheating on him, were interesting because it’s all very clearly written out in the script. It’s written that he has trouble remembering his wife’s Facebook password, finally remembers it, discovers her secret, and then gets upset. But when we shot it, it got very interesting. I would say his character’s thoughts while he was performing them. It’s something that we both came up with. I would say “oh, what’s her password again? God, I thought I remembered it…..oh yeah, that’s it! Wait, what is that? Oh fuck!” I was standing beside the camera saying Otto’s thoughts, which was something that Paul really wanted. And in regard to the phone conversations featured in the film, we shot them separately. Some actors like to have an actual person, or the other actor, feeding him the lines when we’re just shooting one side. Paul didn’t want that. In the big scene where he and the character of Lara are talking on the phone, we didn’t have our actress, Heather Lawless, read the lines, but rather our script supervisor in another room, doing the dialogue with him. When we shot Heather’s side of that conversation, Paul volunteered to hide behind the couch she’s sitting on and run the scene with her. It was a very nice thing to do, as it was his day off and he came in to do that for her.

Speaking of finding ways to shoot those telephone conversations, did you ever struggle with how to keep them lively? A phone call is not something inherently cinematic, but you make them very entertaining. A few examples include Otto talking to his friend on the phone about his marriage,?as you cut to his friend on the other line, a nonchalant grade school principal with students sluggishly sitting in his office. I’m also reminded of the last phone call in the film, between Otto and his daughter, which is unique because we’re only shown Otto….

MacLachlan: You know, that?was something I didn’t even realize until we were shooting. Whenever Otto talks to his daughter, you don’t hear her. It wasn’t a conscious decision. Most of the other phone conversations in the film feature both people on the phone. That’s again a testament to Paul’s acting. That last conversation in the film was done completely on his own. There’s one other conversation in the film, where he calls up Lara and asks her to come over, that Paul did completely?by himself. It is a curious thing, to keep a phone conversation alive in a movie. The big conversation between Lara and Paul features the two characters in separate rooms. Sometimes when you see movies with people on the phone, you think “this is boring! I want to see the two people together,” but I don’t feel that it’s boring here, because of the performances and the length of the scene.

The film also has some fun with the very religious (one character is hypersexualized and yet has to consult her Bible afterward because she feels guilty about her urges). And yet, by having Otto’s daughter interested in church as well, perhaps it’s not all antagonistic.

MacLachlan: Religion is a funny thing to present sincerely. I don’t know if it’s particularly regional, but we had a lot of religion in?Junebug?too and a lot of people noticed it. I’m not religious, but it’s something that’s in a lot of people’s lives (and a lot of people I know’s lives). Children of Otto’s daughter’s age start to ask about God, and if they don’t go to church, they’re wondering why they’re not. The daughter sees her father getting hurt all the time and wonders what kind of God would do that. Because of this, she wants to talk to the female minister. And in regard to Debbie Spangler [the hypersexualized character previously mentioned], I don’t think her problem is that she’s religious, but that she’s a little bit bipolar. That’s the problem. She has overpowering feelings that get away from her every once in a while.

When you’re directing a scene, do you think about?genre at all? I’m thinking of the scene with the therapist, where she explains to Otto, in front of his wife, that his marriage is over. It’s very funny due to the awkward humility of the situation, but it’s also somewhat sad and tragic.?

MacLachlan: I don’t really think in that way. I’ve heard this film described in so many different ways, whether by calling it a dramedy, or a comedy, or a drama, or a romantic comedy. I just think that life is funny and sad at the same time. It can be horrifying too. I think it has all of these mixtures and I enjoy?films that are like that and have those elements.

In Season 1, we introduced ※,§ a deluded, name-dropping, inappropriate, social-climbing couple of New York City, to the interwebs on LogoTV.com. In Season 2, that premiered on?Feb. 18th, we wanted to up the ante without upping the ultra-low budget. So, when the show*s creators and writers, Damon Cardasis and Shannon Walker, dreamed up a car chase scene through New York City, we paused for a moment, then said, ※we*ll figure it out!§? Two months later it was 2am in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and we*re shooting a latex clad transexual, behind the wheel of a rented Mustang convertible with Canon 5D Mark III*s mounted on every corner of the car. The ante had indeed been raised. It was truly a ※DIY§ project for our production company. But, if we really are going to use that wonderful buzzword, ※DIY,§ then how did we ※do it ourselves§?

Let us introduce ourselves. We*re the Director/Producer team Roxy Hunt and Tony Castle, at . ?Since ※Vicky & Lysander§ is a passion project for us, the budget had to come from our own pockets, and keeping cost and time down was essential.?With two seasons under our belt, we wanted to pass on a few tips to fellow filmmakers on how to increase the production value of your work, without going broke. Here is what worked, what didn*t work, and an explanation as to why our office is filled with Barbie dolls.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 4.56.08 PM

Here’s our 6 Tips:

1. ?Practice everything you can:

It*s no surprise that thorough pre-production will save you time on set and make everything run a whole lot smoother. Rehearsing with actors is always very useful, but it*s equally important to make detailed shot lists and storyboards. Even rehearsing camera moves and set-ups will enable you to have a set with almost 0% downtime.

One shoot day comes to mind when we probably should have followed our own advice. It was a simple jib shot above a bed that started on a close-up of our leading lady Vicky as she recalls the pain staking memory of the time her thoroughbred horse Vanessa, was murdered. All we needed to do was jib up from a close-up to a wide shot above the bed, but it was the crews first time using this particular jib, and something was just off every time we tried the move.

VICKY_HORSE_VANESSAVICKY_WIDE

The night was getting late, the set was getting weary, morale was dropping, but we were determined to get it right. Time and time again we tried different tricks to keep it steady, balance it more precisely, but all of this was eating up time on our shoot and making people anxious. In the end, we finally got the move down (and it made for a great shot), but had we devoted time before the shoot day to practicing and perfecting the move with the crew, we surely would have had an earlier wrap time.

Rehearsals aside – shot lists, storyboards, and detailed overheads were always essential for our shoots. The idea was to avoid anyone asking, ※Ok, what*s next?§ We always kept our vision for each scene handy in order to keep the momentum going.

Quick Tip: If you are, like us, not great storyboard artists, buy a few Barbies for use as stand-ins§ in your storyboards. Simply set them up under the approximate lighting you are aiming for, snap a few pics on your iPhone, and voila!? Storyboards in under 5 minutes. Easy and fun!

Set design and location can obviously influence the production value of your work but often times you*re far from being able to afford a sound stage, build sets, or pay for location rental fees. Without much cash to spend on locations, we specifically searched for places that were already dressed fairly close to what we wanted to save cost. Additionally, Shannon and Damon kept in mind early on in the writing process locations we might have access to, and that wouldn*t require very much effort in production design.

in the Financial District of NY, ?which Shannon had been attending for years seemed like an ideal option, so much so, that it was written specifically into the script for a scene in which the characters Lysander and Jenny work up a sweat as they talk through their relationship problems. The space was filled with boxing memorabilia, punching bags, weights, and a large boxing ring in the center, all of which made that scene a lot more realistic and allowed the viewer to become more immersed in the narrative. In lieu of paying a rental fee, the gym agreed to let us shoot after closing time as long as we kept it under 3 hours, paid their front desk employee her hourly wage to stay overtime, and featured the gym*s signage in the episode. Make as many deals like this as you can!

Quick Tip: Instead of opting to pay a location rental fee, offer things you do have. It could be free publicity for the space, featuring their logos in the film, or mentioning them in social media.

3. ?Dont skimp on the sound design:

Even though you may not have a ton of resources to devote to post-production, always remember that sound is an important tool to make your work much more cohesive and sophisticated. Films like Catfish, or Blair Witch Project, that did not rely on high-end cameras or lighting, have a lower-budget look, but because their sound design was crucial in telling their stories they kept their audience invested in the narrative. For us, adding over the top, emotionally charged ※trailer music§ and sound FX to our season 2 trailer, helped pull the piece together, keep the pace moving, and also communicate the humor and style of the show to our viewers.

Quick Tip:? Using resources like , , and Videoblocks.com?are cost-effective, easy ways to add great sounds and music.

4. Every dollar you spend should be seen onscreen:

A small jib, a portable dolly, springing for nicer lenses, a cheap fog machine and a nice wig (if the scene calls for a jet-black wig wearing super hero kicking down a door, see V&L Season 2 Trailer and ep. 209#), can easily up the production value of your work.

Quick Tip: Great resources for cheaper equipment that weve used are (where now you can even rent the ), , and even renting from a friend can be a great resource as well.

5. Think on your feet:

This might seem like an obvious point, but it*s worth remembering. Even if you*ve tried your hardest to prepare for a shoot, you*ve also got to be prepared for things to change. Even though we were very committed to the vision of what we wanted the show to be, sometimes our vision had to be adapted. For example, one scene in episode three, called for 30 businessmen around a large conference table as Lysander pitches his ground-breaking new fragrance. It was the night before the shoot, and our Craigslist ad only yielded three responses for these businessmen extras. We were stressed. The next morning, two out of the three had dropped out, and we were left with one very committed middle-aged man named Larry. Suddenly, it all made sense. The joke of Lysander embarrassing himself by pitching his ridiculous idea to 30 powerful investors, became an overly confident Lysander conducting what he thinks is a life-changing meeting with one docile man in an over-sized conference room, fit for 30.

6. Just say, “Yes!”:

So, there we are speeding down the quiet streets of Sunset Park in a rented convertible for our epic car chase climax. We called on a fellow filmmaker friend, ?, who provided the expertise for the car mounts. We lit the inside of the car with handheld LED lights bought from a hardware store, and we loaded up on sandwiches from a local deli. Of course, we got a flat tire before the night was over, but it was 4am by that time anyways, and we had what we needed. There were definitely times when we had no clue what we were doing, and of course we were barely awake by the end of it, but because we just said ※yes§ to the idea, Season 2 features (among many ridiculous premises) a convertible speeding uptown in the cover of night, racing to cross 14th street, in order to escape the evil free thinking artists of downtown Manhattan.
